Sikkim records highest rate of suicide in India, with 43.1% in 2022: NCRB

As the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) releases its annual report, Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI), Sikkim comes out on top for the highest rate of suicide in the country with 43.1%, followed by Andaman and Nicobar Islands (42.8%), Puducherry (29.7%), Kerala (28.5%), and Chhattisgarh (28.2%).

The rate of suicide is the number of suicides per one lakh population, and the national average stands at 12.4 percent, with a total of 1,70,924 suicides in the country.

Sikkim reported 293 suicide cases in 2022, 27 more cases than in 2021, an increase of 10.2% in the suicide rate.

In the previous two years, Andaman and Nicobar Islands had the highest rate of suicides in the country, followed by Sikkim.

As per the NCRB report on ADSI, males, with 226 suicide cases against 67 by women, dominated the highest number of suicides in Sikkim, and unemployment, with a total of 83 suicides, was the biggest reason for suicide in the state.
