When Yash Chopra locked Rani Mukerji’s parents in a room when the actress refused to…
Rani Mukerji has made some fine choices as an actor at this stage of her career when the young actors are also delivering pretty solid work. And this has been the case ever since she started back in 1997 with Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat. However, she once narrated an amusing incident to News18 about veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra locking her parents in a room.
She said, “At that time, (I was) refusing work, like my mother thought I had gone mad because anything that was getting offered to me I was just like ‘no, no, no’. I started making decisions then. A lot of film critics and magazines had written me off and they said ‘her career’s over’ and I was okay with that. I was like probably they are right but I’m not going to give up.“
She added, “Then luckily Saathiya came along and I remember Yash’s (Chopra) uncle calling my parents to the office. My parents had gone to tell Yash’s uncle that ‘Rani is not interested in doing this film’. He called me up and said, ‘Beta, you’re making a very big mistake. I’m locking the door of my room and I’m not letting your parents out till you say yes to the film’. And I thank him for that.”
Rani Mukerji and YRF have collaborated on films like Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Saathiya, Hum Tum, Veer-Zaara, Bunty Aur Babli, Tara Rum Pum, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Dil Bole Hadippa, Mardaani, Hichki, Bunty Aur Babli 2, and Mardaani 2.
On turning down Lagaan
At IFFI 2023 in Goa, Mukerji cited why she couldn’t be a part of Aamir Khan’s Oscar-nominated period drama. “The only film which I could say I was unfortunate that I couldn’t be part of was ‘Lagaan‘ because there was a particular date clash and Aamir was turning producer with the film and he said that “Rani I am shooting this film in a particular way, so I want all my actors in this particular place for 6 months and not move.”
She added, “I also asked the other producers if they would be okay if I left the film because I would really like to do Aamir’s film, he’s a close friend of mine. But the producer refused to let me go. It was very sad.”
