Rohit Sharma reacts as India beat Afghanistan after two Super Overs: ‘Don’t remember when last time…’

India captain Rohit Sharma was surprised as everyone as India prevailed against Afghanistan on Wednesday after a double Super Over to sweep the T20 series 3-0. In the dead-rubber at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Rohit Sharma became the first batter to score five hundreds in T20Is as he smashed 121 not out off 69 balls to guide India to 212/4. He was ably supported to Rinku Singh who scored 69 not out off 39.

Afghanistan tied the match with Gulbadin Naib scoring 55 not out off 23 as teams needed a Super Over to decide the winner.

In the first Super Over, Afghanistan made 16 but India found a way to match it as Rohit cleverly retired hurt midway through the over. In the second Super Over, India batted first time and got 11 runs.

Afghanistan, however, lost both their wickets in first three balls as India won by 10 runs.

“I don’t remember when was the last time this happened. I think I batted 3 times in one of the IPL games,” a surprised and exhilarated Rohit said after the match as he was declared the Player of the Match.

He also spoke about the importance of his 190-run unbeaten partnership with Rinku in just 93 balls that allowed India to get to 212 in the first innings and eventually paved the way for their victory.

“Creating the partnership was important and we (Rinku and I) kept talking to each other to not lose that intent in big games and it was a good game for us to be in, the pressure was there and was important to bat long and deep and not compromise on the intent we want to show,” Rohit said.

The captain was also full of praise for Rinku who once again came up with a crucial innings from lower down the order.

“The last couple of series that he played, he showed what he can do with the bat. Very calm and knows his strength pretty well. He is coming off age and doing what is expected of him and he has done really well for India. Augurs well for the team moving forward, wanted someone like that at the backend and we know what he has done in the IPL and he has carried that to the Indian colours as well,” Rohit said.
