RR director of cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, explains Joe Root’s decision to opt out of IPL 2024:
“During our retention conversations, Joe informed us of his decision to not take part in IPL 2024. Even in a short span of time, Joe was able to create such a positive impact on the franchise and the players around him. His energy around the group and the experience he brought to the Royals will be missed. We respect his decision totally and wish him success in everything he does.”

IPL 2024 Retention Day Live: The IPL 2024 trading window comes to an end by 4 PM IST on 26 November 2023. This means the final list of retained and released players per franchise will be finalised by Sunday evening. The remaining purse of teams for the IPL 2024 mini-auction depends on what teams do in the trading window and how many players they retain. In the trading window, franchises can swap players or execute all-cash deals to buy a player. The deals, however, need to get approval from the IPL governing council.
A player has to agree to be traded and âiconâ players cannot be traded. Once the trading window deadline ends at 4 PM IST on Sunday then the final list of retained players for each franchise will be out. This will also determine the purse available for each team.
Some big trades have already taken place. Romario Shepherd (Rs50 lakh) was first to bbe traded to Mumbai Indians from Lucknow Super Giants. Later, Devdutt Padikkal (Rs 7.5 crore) moved to Lucknow Super Giants from Rajasthan Royals, and Avesh Khan (Rs10 crore) joined Rajasthan Royals from Lucknow Super Giants.
It has also been rumoured that Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya will be joining his former franchise Mumbai Indians, while Prthivi Shawa is set to be retained by Delhi Capitals. All-rounder Shardul Thakur, however, is on the verge of being released by Kolkata Knight Riders.
