The Reliance-backed JioCinema app has risen to the top spot among free apps on Google Play as the FIFA World Cup gets underway on Sunday.
The World Cup will be broadcast on both the recently created Sports 18 on the linear side and JioCinema, an OTT app run by Reliance Jio Infocomm that offers on demand entertainment content to Jio mobile customers, both of which are part of the Reliance Jio Group. In an exception to the rule, non-Jio mobile members will also be able to access JioCinema for free to watch the FIFA World Cup.
Jio Cinema has already scored a goal at FIFA before the game has even started.
According to 42 matters, a worldwide mobile app analytics company, JioCinema was the most downloaded free app on Google Play as of Friday.
Reliance has extended an invitation to users of competing telecom plans to watch the World Cup on the streaming app, which is typically a benefit reserved for Jio’s mobile plan subscribers.
