After Vande Bharat, India to launch low-budget public carrier push-pull Amrit Bharat train

Amrit Bharat Express, designed primarily to cater to the needs of migrant workers, will come equipped with push-pull technology for faster acceleration and reduction in travel time.

“After Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat train is ready based on the push-pull technology,” Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Monday after inspecting the newly built push-pull rake at New Delhi Railway Station.

As per a report by ToI, Amrit Bharat is set to make one-time special run between Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya, the birth place of Lord Ram, and Bihar’s Darbhanga via Sitamarhi, which is the birthplace of Sita. The train is expected to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 30 December, 2023.

The route Ayodhya-Darbhanga is considered significant as the train has been designed for those who travel long distance in search for work. The railways will soon be deciding on the route for operating the second such train, the report said.

What is push-pull technology?

India has the largest rail network in Asia and the world’s second largest one. Indian Railways serves more than 10 million passengers every day and majority of them belong to weaker sections or are from lower income groups.

To boost the train travel experience, push-pull technology has been introduced in trains.

After Vande Bharat Express trains, this technology will now be available in Amrit Bharat train.

The train will have a locomotive at each end for a push-pull operation which allows for faster acceleration.

Trains with “push-pull” technology have two engines—instead of one—pull a set of coaches.

The two engines, hard-wired to act as one, provide additional power to the train and reduce the acceleration and deceleration times of the train significantly, thereby making higher average speeds possible.

These Push Pull Train is being manufactured at Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF).

Why is push-pull a big tech step up for India?

One of the key benefits of push pull operation is that it reduces in train journey time due to improved acceleration.

Also, the process of shunting the loco around to the other end for the return journey is no longer required. This, thereby, reduces platform occupancy duration and in turn improves utilisation of existing station capacity and due to equal distribution of draft/ buff forces from both the ends. It also enhances the riding comfort.
