Edited excerpts from the interview
How much do you feel your life has changed post social media?
A lot actually. Initially, when Instagram had come, you could still get away with not posting so much, you know and I was very happy at that point. But now I feel like your page has become a reflection of you. Your resume. It’s just everything, it’s advanced Biodata, where people just go and know it all. Who is Anya? What does she do? What does she live? What does she look like? What can she look like?
How did you approach this character and how was your prep like?
There was a lot of prep that we put into my character, Lala, and I’m sure all the other characters also. Lala was actually very far from Anya as a personality. They’re not very similar, as people, you know, and also what she does. She’s an influencer. I don’t really understand Instagram very well. There was this barrier in my head where I used to feel like how I will do justice to this person that I’m so far away from. My director Arjun had done his prep so so well, we used to sit together and discuss about my character a lot. We worked a lot on who she was, which gave me a lot of confidence to then go and play her, because I felt more secure and sure of who this girl was, and then I could do justice to her.
You play a very ambitious character in the film. If I have to ask you, how would you differentiate between being ambitious and being selfish?
That’s an interesting question. Actually I think when you’re ambitious at a certain point, you will be considered selfish because someone that different, okay, so this is a very interesting question you asked. I think maybe the biggest difference is, when my ambition does not hurt another person, I might not come across as selfish, but if I’m ruthlessly ambitious where I don’t care about the people around me, I will be considered selfish in that situation.
What does the title signify for you?
As individuals, as people, we’ve also to a certain extent lost our own individual personalities. Trying to be another person. You want to be another person we’re not very accepting of, I mean of course I’m not. And this is not a generalized statement, but I’m seeing a lot of us are not comfortable or accepting of who we are. A lot of us don’t know how to be present. A lot of us don’t know how to listen. A lot of us don’t know how to actually have a conversation. If you see our attention span, it has really deteriorated, why is it that?
