The COP28 conference began on Thursday (30 December, 2023) with an early victory as nations agreed to launch a “loss and damage” fund for vulnerable countries devastated by natural disasters.
But delegates face two weeks of tough negotiations on an array of issues that have long bedevilled climate talks, starting with the future of oil, gas and coal.
PM Modi’s schedule for COP28
The Prime Minister will be staying in Dubai for around 21 hours during this, he will be holding seven bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the climate summit, deliver four speeches and participate in two special initiatives on climate events.
PM Modi will deliver an address at the opening session of the COP28 World Climate Action Summit on Friday.
The World Climate Action Summit is the High-Level Segment of the 28th Conference of Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Ahead of his speech, PM Modi has emphasised the need for significant climate financing and technological transfer to developing countries.
In an interview with the UAE-based Aletihad newspaper, the Indian Prime Minister highlighted that while these nations have not been major contributors to the climate crisis, they are eager to be part of the solution. However, their participation hinges on access to necessary funding and technology.
The address of PM Modi at the COP28 World Climate Action Summit is poised to set the tone for the conference’s deliberations, potentially shaping the future course of global climate policy and action.
