MS Dhoni files criminal complaint against former business partners for alleged fraud of Rs 15 crore

Former India captain MS Dhoni has sued his former business partners for not honouring a contract and defrauding him for an amount of Rs 15 crore, his lawyer said on Friday. Dhoni filed the criminal complaint against Mihir Diwakar and Soumya Vishwas of Aarka Sports and Management Limited regarding a deal that was struck in 2017. The compaint has been filed in a local court in Dhoni’s hometown of Ranchi.

According to a report on The Indian Express, Diwakar and Vishwas happen to be the directors of the aforementioned firm and had approached the 2011 World Cup-winning captain to setup cricket academies and sports complexes in his name, both in India as well as abroad. The franchise fees would go directly to Dhoni and there would be a 70:30 split on royalty fees.

According to Dhoni’s lawyer Dayanand Singh however, he stopped receiving money from the firm after being paid an initial amount. Dhoni would then withdraw the authorisation letter to Arka Sports, which had been issued on 7 May, 2017, on 15 August 2021 after repeated violation of the terms of agreement.

The firm, however, allegedly continued to setup academies without Dhoni’s consent and without his knowledge, forcing the Chennai Super Kings captain to take the legal route.

The report also mentioned that Dhoni had filed the complaint on 17 October through close friend Seemant Lohani under IPC sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating).

Since announcing his international retirement on 15 August, 2020, Dhoni has limited his appearances to the Indian Premier League while keeping himself engaged with various business ventures as well as hobby farming for the rest of the year.
