Quick Facebook ad image sizes

We cover each ad format in more detail below, but here is a quick overview of all popular Facebook ad image sizes at a glance.

Facebook feed ad sizes

The Facebook feed is probably what you think of most when it comes to Facebook ad sizes. It’s the endlessly scrollable place to find all your friends’ status updates, photo posts, videos, and more — plus content from brands and Facebook Pages you follow.

Facebook feed ads come in many styles, from carousel ads to single image or video ads, as it’s one of the most popular Facebook ad placements. The second item in a user’s feed is an ad, with more mixed between organic content as a user continues scrolling.

Maximum file size: 4GB

Maximum video length: 241 minutes

Tips for Facebook feed ads

While not required, we recommend adding captions to your video ads to make your ads accessible to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, as well as people who watch social media videos with the sound off.

Don’t make a 241-minute ad. Keep it short and attention-grabbing: 15 seconds or less should be enough for most ads.

No sound, no problem: you don’t actually need to have sound in your video to run it as an ad (although we recommend it).

Facebook carousel ad sizes

Facebook carousel ads allow you to showcase between two and 10 images, videos, or a mix of both and link each one to a separate URL. These are one of the most popular Facebook ad formats thanks to their versatility and having so many placement options across Facebook on desktop and mobile.

One of the most effective carousel formats is collection carousel ads, which pull images and links from your connected product catalog to automatically generate relevant, conversion-focused ads for e-commerce retailers.

Facebook carousel ad placements

You can create image or video carousel ads in each of these Facebook ad placements:

Facebook Feed

Facebook Stories

Facebook Reels

Facebook Marketplace

Facebook search results

Facebook Business Explore

Facebook Audience Network (e.g. websites/other media outside of Facebook)

Facebook right column (desktop only)

Facebook Groups Feed

Facebook Reels carousel ads function a bit differently than other ad types, though. There are two types:

Catalog product carousel ads

Overlay carousel ads

Catalog product carousel ads

You can include up to 10 images, each with a unique URL link. These are featured at the bottom of your Reel for viewers to click on. This format is perfect for e-commerce brands to link to products from the Reel.

Overlay carousel ads

These ads can either be manually inserted on your own Reels, or distributed automatically — now known as Advantage+ placements — across the Facebook ad network.

You can use up to 10 images or videos for these carousel “cards” which will show at the bottom of the Reel they run on.

Tips for Facebook carousel ads

Each carousel image or video must link to a URL. You can link to the same landing page for all frames, or different ones.

A carousel needs a minimum of two images or videos, and you can have up to 10.

Try using a mix of images and videos within the same carousel ad. Facebook Reels carousel ads are image-only, though.

Facebook right-column ad sizes

Right column ads are a desktop-only Facebook ad format best for driving traffic or raising brand awareness. These can be image or video ads, paired with a headline and link. You can use an existing carousel ad for this placement too, although only the first media item in your carousel will show as a right column ad.

File type: MP4, MOV, GIF

Recommended video settings: H.264 codec, square pixels, fixed frame rate (30fps), stereo AAC audio compression at 128 kbps

Maximum file size: 4GB

Tips for Facebook right-column ads

Of all Facebook ad formats, this is the one where your headline and ad copy matters more than the image or video to capture attention.

A/B test different headlines to see what performs the best.

Keep in mind this is a desktop-only ad placement, so don’t link out to the App Store or other mobile-optimized experience. Keep it desktop-friendly.

Facebook search results ad sizes

Search results ads appear on, predictably, the search results page. These can perform very well if your targeting aligns with a user’s intent. For example, my search for “Vancouver events” implies I’m looking for something to do, so any ad that a) is for an upcoming event near me, and b) is about something I’m interested in has a high chance of me clicking on it and, potentially, signing up.

They’re a great way to market events, but also for many other types of content, from recipe books to products and more.

Tips for Facebook search results ads

Keep in mind what your ad will be surrounded by in search results and choose an image or video that fits the topic while still standing out from the organic search results.

Ensure you’ve set up Meta Pixel to accurately track conversions on your website.

Facebook video feed ad sizes

Clicking a video anywhere on Facebook opens it up to full size, known as Facebook Watch (or the video feed). Or, access it directly by clicking the Video tab on desktop or on mobile.

After a video finishes, you can scroll to watch other related videos in a TikTok-style experience designed to keep you in the app for as long as possible.

Video feed ads show up with the “sponsored” label alongside their organic counterparts. It’s just like the regular Facebook feed, except only for video.

File type: MP4 or MOV

Recommended video settings: H.264 codec, square pixels, fixed frame rate (30fps), stereo AAC audio compression at 128 kbps

Maximum file size: 4GB

Maximum video length: up to 241 minutes

Tips for Facebook video feed ads

With so many videos to scroll through, you need to hook people fast, like within the first second, to keep them watching.

Test different calls to action, which appear at the bottom of your video next to the link button.

Facebook in-stream video ad sizes

In-stream video ads “pop in” during organic video content and play at the start, during, or after another video, including in live streams. Your ad can be up to 15 seconds and you can choose to have it skippable, where the user can tap to close it after the first five seconds, or have the full video ad play before the organic video resumes.

Display size: 1080px x 1080px recommended, or larger

Aspect ratio: 1:1

File type: MP4 or MOV

Recommended video settings: H.264 codec, square pixels, fixed frame rate (30fps), stereo AAC audio compression at 128 kbps

Maximum file size: 4GB

Maximum video length (desktop): Between 5 and 15 seconds

Maximum video length (mobile): Between 5 seconds and 10 minutes

Tips for Facebook in-stream ads

Since these video ads are “interrupting” users as they scroll organic videos, it’s crucial to hook people right away with an attention-getting question, promise, or other teaser to keep them watching.

Don’t max out the 15 second time limit if you don’t need to. Tell your story in as little time as possible to maximize watch time and engagement, especially for skippable video ads.

Facebook Reels video ad sizes

Promote an existing Reel or create an ad-specific one to be inserted between organic Reels as users scroll the Reels section on desktop or mobile. The only difference between a regular Reel and an ad is that on Reels ads, you can include a call to action button with a link.

Image ads can also be used in this placement as a single frame interspersed between organic Reels content.

Maximum file size: 4GB

Maximum video length: No maximum limit

Tips for Facebook Reels ads

Follow all the regular rules of creating great Facebook Reels: capture attention within the first few seconds, include captions and/or text overlays for maximum effect, and provide a value or pay-off at the end.

Oddly, there’s no maximum time limit for Facebook Reels ads, but don’t go overboard. Get your point across in the shortest time possible.

Facebook Stories ad sizes

Facebook Stories ads appear between organic Stories as users scroll through their friends’ Stories. You can place either an image or video Stories ad and link it to a website. Video Story ads play the first 10 seconds, with an option for the user to tap to keep watching if it’s longer than that. Image Story ads show for five seconds, unless someone swipes away sooner.

Maximum file size: 4GB

Maximum video length: Up to 2 minutes, though only the first 10 seconds will play in full and the user must click to continue watching the rest.

Tips for Facebook Stories ads

Just like Reels ads, capturing attention right away is of utmost importance. Ensure you’re adding something intriguing within the first 1-3 seconds to keep people interested.

Use Facebook Stories stickers, text overlays, links, and other add-ons to customize your Story ad and make it feel more authentic.

Facebook Messenger Stories ad sizes

Messenger Story ads are just like regular Facebook Story ads, except they appear between organic Stories from your friends in the separate Facebook Messenger mobile app.

Facebook Messenger Story image ads play for up to five seconds, if a user doesn’t swipe away first. Facebook Messenger Story video ads play for up to 10 seconds, with a link for the user to watch the full video.

Maximum file size: 4GB

Tips for Facebook Messenger Stories ads

Leave approximately 15% from the top and bottom (about 250px) of the video clear of text or logos as this is where the call to action will be.

Facebook Marketplace ad sizes

Facebook Marketplace ads are an image-only format across desktop and mobile and, of course, are shown in the Marketplace tab. However, they also show up in the feed and across Facebook since they use Facebook’s automatic Advantage+ placement algorithm to match your ad with people who are most likely to buy.

Their primary purpose is to sell products and convert customers who are already looking to buy something. Marketplace ads always have a “sponsored” label next to them.

Facebook Marketplace image ad sizes

Display size: 1080px x 1080px or larger

Aspect ratio: 1:1

File type: PNG or JPG

Maximum file size: 30MB

Tips for Facebook Marketplace ads

Obvious one here, but ensure your product is front and center in the image. It’s best to keep text minimal and put the focus on your product.

Make your ad image stand out. Add brand colors or use unique styling to make your product photo stand out from organic Marketplace listings.

Facebook Feed collection ad sizes

Facebook Collection ads look like carousel ads (because they are) but they’re a bit different as they’re automatically generated from your e-commerce product catalog, which you can add and manage in Commerce Manager.

You can also manually choose products from your connected catalog to put together specifically-targeted collection ads. Collection ads use product images or videos in a square (1:1) aspect ratio. You can upload other sizes, but they’ll be cropped to 1:1.

When someone taps a product in your collection ad on a mobile device, they see a full-screen view of your products, called an Instant Experience. It’s like a mini storefront.

On desktop, collection ads function as carousel ads, linking you over to that product’s page on your website (or other URL you’ve specified).

Facebook Feed collection image and video ad sizes

Display size: 1080px x 1080px or larger

Aspect ratio: 1:1

File type: PNG or JPG for image, or MP4 or MOV for video

Maximum file size: 4GB

Tips for Facebook Feed collection ads

Try testing collection ads where you choose the products manually as well as enabling automatic collection ads (which chooses 2-4 products for you) to see which strategy performs best.

If possible, add at least 50 products to your product catalog before turning on automatic collection ads.

Use UTM parameters in links to accurately track conversion performance in your analytics.

Facebook Reels and video collection ad sizes

These feature up to four products at the bottom of a Facebook Reel or video ad.

For this format, you’ll need a 9:16 video, like any other Facebook Reel you’d upload, plus an Advantage+ product catalog, which is automatically synced from Shopify, WooCommerce, Big Commerce, or several other partners.

Maximum file size: 4GB

Maximum video length: Up to 2 minutes

Tips for Facebook Reels and video collection ads

Periodically check your connected Advantage+ product catalog to ensure your products are syncing correctly from your e-commerce platform.

Create an Instant Experience landing page to direct people to when they click on your Reels collection ad. This should be a mobile-optimized, landing page showing your best products or top sellers.

You can repurpose existing Reels to use as the “background” to the collection ad.

Facebook Business Explore ad sizes

Business Explore shows up when someone taps an organic post from a business on a mobile device only. Scrolling down, they may see a heading of Explore more in (the category the business they’re viewing is in). This shows a mix of organic and paid content from similar businesses.

Facebook Business Explore image ad sizes

Display size: 1080px x 1080px, or larger

Minimum width: 600px

Maximum file size: 4GB

Maximum video length: Up to 241 minutes

Tips for Facebook Business Explore ads

While you can place a Business Explore ad with any aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5, stick to 1:1 because it will likely be cropped to this anyway. Plus, images with links must use 1:1.
